1stisms wonders on the intersection of art and learning, decorating canvases with sentences spaced, dashed, cut up and rehashed. These works favor bold lines and occur in challenging presentations, ripping up iconic statements and obscuring, reframing, revitalizing their meaning through inventive application; wrapped in textile, warped by iconography, and delivered to the viewer as mostly optically illusive at first glance. Key to the project is to discuss disability and the struggles therein, whether in our understanding of language or of art—something artist Sultan Bin Fahad knows first hand in his own experience of dyslexia; when words unfurl, unfold, and refurbish. As such, 1stism is foremost an artwork experience that seeks to emphasize learning difference in its enforcing of vocabular separation; sentence stitched, chalk smudged, apostrophized, and punctuated.
